PictureFifth grade students in Mrs. Reinthaler’s class at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic School had a fun morning diving into the world of aquatic invasive species. These young stewards learned about the negative effects that invasives have on the environment, and how they, as students, can prevent their spread and Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! The students are prepared, and excited, to begin creating their posters for the Northwoods’ Invasive Species Poster Contest. 1/29/19

ABOUT OUR AIS SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAM:
​Today’s youth will be tomorrow’s leaders, so it is imperative that we educate them about the importance of the environment that supports all of us.

As students learn about the complexity and importance of our native and diverse ecosystems, it is also important that they learn about how AIS are bullying their way into frail environments, fragmenting habitats, endangering threatened and endangered species, and threatening the biodiversity our life-sustaining native ecosystems.

Due to the need for AIS education in academic studies, we can help teachers accomplish this by bringing our AIS School Outreach program to the classroom. Our grade-specific program provides comprehensive and engaging AIS education that awakens curiosity and connects students to the local waters that they live on and play in, and turns awareness into actions to prevent and manage invasions of AIS. Our program also encourages students to think critically, develop valuable problem-solving skills, become decision makers, and stewards of the environment.

Our exciting and innovative AIS education teaching material includes unique hands-on tools and preserved critters to actively engage your students in a fun, learning experience while we tell the story of invasive species through 5 distinct modules:

  • History of Invasive Species
  • Introduction and Spread of Aquatic Invasive Species
  • Impacts to Natural Areas
  • Impacts to Students’ Lives
  • Student and Community Action

Our AIS School Outreach program is not restricted to traditional classroom settings – our AIS youth field experience programs offers students valuable opportunities to broaden their AIS awareness, turn awareness into actions, and become Citizen Scientists in an outdoor setting. 

We will be happy to provide AIS youth education, activities, and Citizen Science programs within a variety of forums such as community activities or environmental lessons for scout groups, week-long camps, after school programs, youth groups, environmental education center programs, school clubs, fishing clubs, and more.

Mrs. Warner’s 4th grade class became Worm Watch Citizen Scientist’s for a day and joined us in the field to study the invasive earthworms in the Germain Hemlocks State Natural Area. These young detectives and scientists extracted, identified, and inventoried the 3 species of invasive earthworms known to occur in the Northwood’s. This was a fantastic opportunity to learn about invasive species, forest ecology, soils, nutrients, the impact that earthworms have to the forest floor, and shoreline habitat. Furthermore, it connected the students to their local environment.

​CAVOC, May 23rd, 2017 through May 25th , 2017
​While at CAVOC, students learned about invasive species in their area, the negative effects that these invasives have on local water bodies, and how they, as students, can prevent the spread of invasive species.  By the end of each session, students were experts on Eurasian Watermilfoil, Rusty Crayfish, Spiny Water Fleas, Zebra Mussels, and Chinese Mystery Snails.  Not only did students become AIS experts, but they also got to put their knowledge to the test by creating invasive species management plans for cleaning and restoring lakes.  The students were able to collaborate when looking at the cause and effects of different methods of treatment in order to help “Little Raven Lake” become invasive species free. Students did a great job!

Exotic Aquatic Explorer Field Day with Nativity School, June 2nd, 2017
Our Exotic Aquatic Explorer days were a blast!  The AIS team was lucky enough to spend the day out on Boom Lake with both Central Elementary School and Nativity Catholic School students. For this event, students created AIS informational videos, planted native plants to help with shoreline restoration, learned how to monitor a lake for invasive species, and caught some Rusty Crayfish! Below are the videos that the students created in order to help to bring awareness to invasive species in Oneida County.
