AIS: Report Sightings

Report Sightings of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS)

Picture

Have you found a new AIS along your shoreline or in a lake, river, stream, or wetland?    Do you need help identifying a potential AIS?

  • Our Early Detection and Rapid Response program  works to prevent the establishment of new invasive species by quickly coordinating all stakeholders that may be involved (WDNR, land owners, and lake associations) to control and prevent the spread of new new invader before it spreads to new areas!
  • Please note the exact location, take a photo, keep the specimen, and call us as soon as possible.
  • Contact Stephanie Boismenue, AIS Coordinator at 715-369-7835 or email sboismenue@co.oneida.wi.us.

Helpful Tips For Reporting:

  • If possible, take a digital photo of the plant or animal in the setting where it was found, showing its identifying characteristics, and some common object for scale (such as your foot , finger, or pencil).
  • If possible, please note the population size/density, habitat type, and landowner name.
  • Please provide the most accurate location data you can. Using GPS is best. You may also note a location on a paper map.
  • Contact us as soon as possible – no later than 4 days after discovery.
  • If possible, please email photographs of the plant or animal
  • We may need to see the actual specimen. Please be prepared to deliver it to our office.

If it is a plant:

  • Collect 5 – 10 intact specimens. Try to get the root system, all leaves as well as seed heads and flowers when present. Place in a ziplock bag with no water. Place on ice and transport to refrigerator. It is important to keep the specimen secure to avoid the spread of the collected species.

If it is an animal other than a fish:

  • Collect up to five specimens. Place in a jar with water; put on ice and transport to refrigerator. Transfer specimen to a jar filled with rubbing alcohol (except for Jellyfish – leave in water).

Thank you for taking the time to collect, report, and deliver your specimen.
