An Inter-regional Approach to Youth Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Education
Produced under a 2015-2016 grant from the Wisconsin Environmental Educational Board (WEEB)
Environmental The Oneida County Land and Water Conservation Department (LWCD), in partnership with the Rhinelander School District (Oneida County) and the Mellen School District (Ashland County), received grant funding from the WEEB to implement “An Inter-regional Approach to Youth Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Education.” The project goals and outcomes integrated youth AIS education into curriculum, developed a unique non-traditional partnership, and integrated technology with field experiences.

A total of 105 students (4 classrooms) from Ashland and Oneida Counties participated in the project, which began in July 2015 and ended December 2016. Here are a few of the project highlights:

  • 105 students from Ashland and Oneida Counties participated
  • Provided students with AIS education and reinforced AIS awareness
  • Students gained increased learning in science, geography, and technology
  • Students were empowered to become part of the solution to prevent the spread of AIS
  • Two field events took place, introducing students from Rhinelander and Mellen to each other and to their regional-specific AIS issues.
  • Field events provided on-shore and on-water learning stations and fostered critical thinking
  • Use of technology during field events broadened students learning experiences
  • A unique and non-traditional partnership was created

“An Inter-regional Approach to Youth Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Education” was produced under a 2015-2016 grant from the WEEB.
